American footwear brand Sperry is doing its part for the environment with the launch of an on-going sustainability platform dubbed "Look Good, Do Good" that aims to reduce the use of plastic.

The new Sperry collection made of Bionicyarn. - Sperry.

The first initiative from the program by the iconic brand, known for creating the original boat shoe, includes the launch of a new shoe collection for Spring 2019, made with 'Bionic' yarn, which is spun from plastic recovered from marine and coastal environments.

The collection for men, women and kids will include a selection of best-loved silhouettes like Sperry's Authentic Original boat shoe in materials and styling inspired by vibrant, multi-colored sailboat sails with patchwork pieces and stitching details. Items from the collection will range from $70-$100.

The brand is also paying special attention to its packaging with shoe boxes for the collection made from 100-percent recycled paper material, and only with vegetable ink and water-based glue.

"We are a brand born of the sea. It is our duty to get involved and protect the waterways that stretch across the globe and connect us all,” explained Kate Minner, CMO, Sperry.

Coinciding with the collection launch, Sperry has launched a sustainability platform, which aims to educate people on ways they can help protect the environment by reducing their use of plastic.

Meanwhile, Sperry and Waterkeeper Alliance are partnering on a voice-controlled experience which works via Amazon Echo smart speaker devices called Sperry Waterkeeper, which when prompted, will offer users a range of actionable, every day tips for using less plastic.
