John Lewis sales fall as fashion has bad week

John Lewis Partnership sales fell 4.1% in the latest week with a drop to £205.68 million, and while the Waitrose supermarkets were down 3.2%, the John Lewis department stores chain suffered the most with a drop of 5.6%.

That was partly due to a poor performance from the usually-buoyant Fashion department in the seven days to May 25. Sales there fell as much as 4.3% year-on-year as the company came up to the anniversary of a price-matching promotion a year ago. The company said that this time last year it had faced “heavy competitor activity”.

The cooler weather compared to last year also particularly affected sales of warm weather items, which were down as much as 18%, although with the weather turning milder this week, it’s to be hoped that the situation has been reversed already.

However, Beauty, a category we haven’t heard that much about from John Lewis for a few weeks, had a strong seven days with sales up as much as 7.3%. 

But the perennial under-performer, the Home department, continued to struggle with its sales down 7.1%. The retailer said that the weather also particularly affected sales in Outdoor Living compared to last year. But its Upholstery sales were up 18.7% as it continued its marketing focus on the living room.
