The extent to which UK Christmas shopping has moved online can be seen from a new study by parcels carrier Royal mail. It said on Tuesday that almost half of festive shoppers do most of their shopping online during this period with UK Christmas e-shopping set to rise 11% year-on-year.

UK Christmas shopping continues to move online

And it said three-quarters of online shoppers start making Christmas purchases in November. But 5% leave it to the week leading up to 25 December.

And good news for the fashion sector — online shoppers’ most popular purchases are clothes (56%), with beauty in fourth place on 39%.

The average gift costs £46, up from £42 last year, and the average number of gifts purchased online at Christmas is seven. The research also revealed that men spend on average £348, compared to women’s spend of £300.

It’s interesting too that 18-24 year olds are more likely to have bought gifts for themselves than any other age group.

Overall, 33% of consumers bought more gifts online in 2018 than 2017 and they cite the comfort of shopping from home, the ability to shop at any time of the day and the ease of comparing prices as key during the Christmas period.

That said, around one in ten online shoppers returned items last Christmas, with women being twice as likely to do so.
