Chanel releases Cara Delevingne animation in Gabrielle Chanel video series

Fashion model Cara Delevingne, a favourite of Karl Lagerfeld, has become a chic cartoon character in Chanel’s latest short film celebrating the Gabrielle bag.

Directed by Japanese filmmaker Shishi Yamazaki, the artistic handbag campaign shows Delevingne chasing after a colour blocking Gabrielle bag and then skating off down the road in a surreal urban landscape.

Yamazaki used a technique called rotoscoping to create the sequence, tracing over motion picture footage to produce a realistic pop art-inspired animation.

The release is part of a series of four short films dedicated to the fashion house’s founder Gabrielle Chanel. The films will be launched each week throughout April and celebrate different aspects of the Chanel Gabrielle handbag.

The first campaign starring American actress Kristen Stewart and directed by Australian filmmaker and artist Daniel Askill was unveiled last week. The two remaining films will feature long-time Chanel muse Caroline de Maigret and musician Pharrell Williams.

The luxury brand's Gabrielle handbag is expected to become a “pillar” style for Chanel and is the first major release since the Boy handbag in 2011. The style was unveiled on the runway in October in Paris.
