Bestseller on Friday said it’s partnering with Finnish material innovation company Spinnova for a “breakthrough textile innovation” as part of “a long-term sustainability journey”.

Being one of the early adopters of the novel fibre material is part of Bestseller’s “ambitious sustainability strategy Fashion FWD”, it said as it also announced a new Fashion FWD Lab.

The two companies are in a joint product development phase, investigating which commercial products in Bestseller’s range of brands would suit Spinnova’s new sustainable fibre, which is made of wood and waste without any harmful chemicals.

Spinnova is currently also working towards commercial scale-up with a number of other brand owners committed to long-term collaboration. The ultimate aim is to “create the world’s most sustainable fabric and turn it into commercial products”.

“Having great brand partners like Bestseller, with the expertise and resources to collaborate with an innovator like us, has been crucial to our material development,” said Spinnova’s CEO and co-founder Janne Poranen. “Bestseller has guided us in finding the right brands and prototype products in their portfolio that we could create with our material and perhaps introduce even before they are commercially available”.

As mentioned, Bestseller has also unveiled Fashion FWD Lab. This focuses on new low-impact circular materials, better production, new business models and smarter ways of manufacturing. It’s the firm’s “experimental sustainability playground” and “acts – most of all – as a catalyst for collaborations consisting of pilot projects, workshops, case studies and more to accelerate sustainable change”.
