‘Denim panties’ might dominate festival fashion this year

Festival fashion has always been about standing out but this year’s style trends might take it to the extreme, according to global fashion search platform Lyst.

Since French label Y/Project unveiled the infamous ‘denim panties’ or ‘janties’ last month, shoppers from all over the world have been searching for the item. Lyst said it has noticed a surge in traffic and a staggering 2,250% increase in page views since mid March.

The $315 denim shorts, presented during Paris Fashion Week last month, will be part of several styling trick fashionistas will be using to turn heads during Coachella, the fashion site predicted.

Based on global search data and social media metrics compiled over the past three months, Lyst said ‘ugly sandals’, futuristic-looking sunglasses and harness chest bags will go mainstream during festival season.

Searches for ‘rubber sandals’ have increased by 34% since the beginning of March, and shoppers have searched for ‘Prada velcro sandals’ on Lyst every seven minutes in the last week.

Kim Kardashian’s recent eyewear collaboration with Carolina Lemke is fuelling interest in futuristic, sports-inspired sunglasses, with searches for race-ready shades increasing by 650% in the week after Kardashian’s launch.

Meanwhile, searches for harness chest bags have increased by 257% since March, Lyst said.

Cycling shorts will continue to have a big fashion moment, particularly neon biker shorts (up 190%), rainbow biker shorts (up 350%) and romper biker shorts (up 300%).

But some things never change, and a festival season staple, the sequin look, will still be favoured by countless festival goers. Sequin bikini sets have seen breakout searches while sequin bikini tops have generated 40% more page views on Lyst since the beginning of March.

Men will also sport sequin outfits, including shimmery jackets like an Asos rainbow-coloured sequin jacket which has generated a 108% increase in page views in the last two weeks.
