New York Fashion Week kicks off with a flurry of '90s inspirations

New York Fashion Week got underway Thursday, September 6, with shows from Collina Strada, John Elliott, Nicole Miller and Jeremy Scott. The day saw various designers pay homage to the 1990s with a vibrant burst of colors, logos, denim and creations inspired by the decade.

The American designer was particularly keen on reliving the '90s with bright -- even fluorescent -- colors, lashings of denim, plus checks, hoodies, 3D logos and dungarees, revisited and updated in a sexy style, slit open down the front. On Instagram, the designer explains that he found inspiration for the collection in old Polaroid pictures of himself taken in 1996 when he was experimenting with makeup and personas.

Although less blatant, a 90s vibe was also in the air at Collina Strada, where collection colors were slightly tamer but came in tie-and-dye effects. The technique may come straight out of the 1960s, but it returned to fashion in the 1990s, and is clearly on the agenda once again. The label also showed its take on cycling shorts, a trend rocked all summer long by fashion icons like Kim Kardashian.

John Elliott also worked with 90s inspirations in a spring/summer 2019 collection influenced by streetwear and sportswear styles, in line with a major trend of the moment. Cycling shorts were spotted on the runway here too, notably in fishnet fabric. They were worn with long sweaters or technical outerwear, or simply under denim shorts. Note that denim featured strongly in the collection.

Nicole Miller showed a much more feminine collection, swaying between casual styles and super-sexy creations. Denim was on the agenda here too, in head-to-toe looks or matched with leopard print, another key feature of the collection. In a further nod to the 1990s, logos opened this spring/summer 2019 show, plus platform sneakers worn with dresses and skirts in short and long cuts.
