Jimmy Kimmel accuses Reformation of copying daughter's designs

Jimmy Kimmel has accused Reformation of copying his fashion designer daughter Katie Kimmel's graphic t-shirt concepts with products that the sustainable retailer claims are the latest iteration of its "carb collection."

Earlier this week the late night TV host tweeted "Scumbag move by [Reformation] stealing ideas from a young artist (who happens to be my daughter [Katie Kimmel].)" He included links to Reformation's tees which include the "cacio e pepe", "spaghetti pomodoro" and "al dente" styles.

Kimmel also linked to Katie Kimmel's website showing her designs, claiming hers came first. The Katie Kimmel tees have block lettering that is skewed, while Reformation's designs display a cleaner font. Graphics on Kimmel's tees say "linguini and clams," "steak diane", "lava cake", "chicken parm" and "appetizer sampler."

Yesterday Reformation replied to Kimmel's challenge on its own Instagram post under the "al dente" shirt. The brand said, "Graphic word tees, sweatshirts, and jackets have been a part of the Reformation brand and design aesthetic since we launched in 2009."

Reformation's followers were outspoken on both sides of the argument. Some felt it was a direct copy and appeared disenfranchised while others came to the defense of the brand saying there was nothing proprietary about using words about food on a tee shirt.

Reformation denied copying Kimmel's designs saying, "We have a deep respect for artistic integrity and would never replicate or appropriate the work of a young artist, or any artist for that matter."

Reformation continued explaining the inspiration for its latest styles, concluding the comment with, "This t-shirt collection is an extension of our 'Carb Collection' that launched in 2015, inspired by the 'carb' in 'carbon emissions,' as our brand mission is to provide a sustainable way to be fashionable."

Currently the $25 Katie Kimmel tee shirt designs are sold out. Reformation's Joplin relaxed tees are available for $38.
