E-commerce giant Amazon has decided to close down its members-only retail club BuyVip, a Spanish-based business it acquired in 2010, citing profitability issues. The online retailer had websites in Spain, Italy and Germany.

According to the company, BuyVip members will be able to use the sales platform until 31 May. Afterwards, the sites will redirect to Amazon.com.

Designed to offer members price reductions on recommended retail products from fashion and lifestyle brands, BuyVip was a flash sales site for European consumers. The decision to shut it down comes as no surprise, as Amazon has been adding similar features to its site and closed down Myhabit in the US a year ago.

All BuyVip employees will be transitioned into new Amazon jobs. The e-commerce company has more than 200 vacancies in Spain, which will be used to accommodate former BuyVip employees. This solution will also apply in Germany and Italy.

Amazon said: “Since we acquired BuyVip in 2010 we have worked to create a shopping experience that will appeal to our customers by offering them an ever expanding catalogue of products, innovative features and attractive discounts. Despite these efforts, the business remains unprofitable. BuyVip has an excellent team of professionals and we have offered everyone new jobs which will them to continue developing their career at Amazon”.
